I intend to check this message board quite often for awhile since I won't be in the studio for a couple of weeks.  I'll be pleased to interact about the lyrics or answer questions anyone might have.  This is your chance!

Indie Hindy,

you have alot of "flying" themes running through alot of songs. Were the "Speckled Bird" references on the new album intentional, or do you just tend to use the same lyrical ideas because they're so durn good?

After a brief flirtation with Australian marsupials, you jettisoned them in favour of birds.  Did you ever considering do any songs about kookaburras or emus?

When are you and Derri going to tour Australia?  Tim came once!

I just really enjoy continuity.  It's poetic to me.  I love to throw out old references for people like you who have followed our music over the years and pay close attention.  As far as the Speckle Bird lyrics in the title track, we were just inventing a backing vocal part for Marc Birdomatic and those lines just came back to me, so we went with it.  Marc has such an awesome vocal tone!  I love his voice on that bridge! As far as the flying theme goes, I'm not sure why I keep perpetuating that.  It's just such a spiritual metaphore.

On a slightly more serious note, though not terribly Choir related....

Buddy Miller's new album is awesome and I love the percussion on "This Old World".  Was that your idea or his?

Jad, I suppose I could have worked a kookaburra song into Free Flying Soul with that whole animal/creature theme...but I think Chase the Kangaroo has enough Ausie references for one career.

Steve - 2 questions:

1. Was there a particular incident that inspired "Nobody Gets a Smooth Ride"? 2. Also, what Husker Du song/album has influenced you most? Why?

Continuity indeed.  I always wanted a shirt like Mark wore.

Steve...you need to get Derri to talk about the mighty Husker Du cd that he is so passionate about too.

The continuity in The Choir's music is something I LOVE alot...Bill Mallonee does much the same thing...

Steve this is like a golden opportunity. I would love to ask you about so many lyrics from the previous albums but I'll contain myself to just the latest one. What was the inspiration to "I Wish I Knew"? If it's too personal I understand it's just that it spoke to my soul so clearly. I feel this way about my wife b/c she suffers from debilitating migraines and sometimes she has to be hospitalized. And everytime she's in pain the words from that song are exactly how I feel, it's like you knew our situation perfectly. Just like you did on "Sad Face." God bless you for your lyrics....they always strike my soul.

Jad, Buddy's album is great!  We recorded in his living room.  I just spread stuff all over the floor and tried random things.  He wanted shakers and tambourine on everything and he loved when I'd make random clangy racket.  He is always open minded and interactive.  The Millers are dear friends.

Gary, Nobody Gets a Smooth Ride is non specific.  I didn't feel like like talking about the "real issues" like divorce, cancer, DUIs, global confict etc.  so I just suggested other random mishaps. I love writing lyrics to Tim's music because its usually intense and whimsical at the same time.  Sunny is another example...and the lyrical content is similar, come to think of it!

Gary, ask Derri about Husker Du.  that's a topic that deserves it's own line of dialogue.

Aaron, I'm so sorry about your wife's migraines.  That's a dreadful affliction.  It can seem so hopeless, I know.  What's her name?  I'll pray for her and others will also.

I wrote  How I Wish I knew about my daughter, Emily (wide eyed wonder girl).  She was fourteen (She's 16 now) and really depressed much of the time.  She's always been the melancholy sort, but was particularly down at that time.  Marc came over one morning to write. Our plan was to come up with something for Caedmon's Call or Sonic Flood but when Marc started playing that melodic picky guitar part (That's Marc playing the acoustic on the album) I immediately began singing "When I see you falling..." with Emily in mind.  Marc and I have written many songs together that I love -- but I think How I Wish I Knew is my favorite.  It's the only song that wasn't written specifically for the new album within a 3 week period.

By the way, Emily was just awarded a full scholarship to Simon's Rock college in Massachusetts, a school for high achieving kids who will skip their last 2 years of high school and go straight to college early!  We're quite proud of her academic success...but mostly I care that she finds peace, love and joy -- which can be elusive.

Luckily, she's not going to a crappy community college during/just after HS...that's a drag.

Congrats to Emily!

So, Steve, was "She's Alright" also inspired by Emily? That's a great song!

btw, Emily has the same birthday as my daughter, except she's only 6. I guess 10 years will pass quickly.

Steve,

Just wanted to say Hi!  I wanted to let you know that your Wide Eyed Wonder album inspired my wife and I to name our first daughter Emily whose is now 11.  If I had a yard has become a realty in owning our first home.

I really liked the last song on Mutt that you and Terry wrote together, "I'm setting you free in which I guess is now a realty with your Emily.  Did you and Terry do any writing together on the new album, "Jeff"? Did you contribute at all to "Jeff"?

Looking forward to seeing you in Charlottesville, Va doing the Dog thing on your way to Cornerstone.

-not the apostle paul

favorite song - "Clouds"

Bereal, "She's Alright" is perhaps my favorite on the new album. I was thinking of a close friend who is recently divorced after many years of marriage. It's a very universal theme, though, and applies to so many women I care about and admire for overcoming adversity..

Paul, yes I was thrilled to co-write that song with Terry. He's a hero to me. It was about his daughter, Noel, but you're right, it sure is relevant to me now! The only other songs I've written with Terry are the first two on the City on a Hill Christmas album. The Dogs never did record "Jeff" after all. Instead, we're doing a bizarre thing called, "Island Dreams." Never try to predict what those lunatics will do next!

Steve,

On "Skinny" you did a song called, "Love Sanctifies" can you give us a little background on the song?  I notice you apologize in the song. To whom? Who is Troy Daugherty and why didn't Derri contribute to your personal album?

And how come no more collections of "fuzzified folk tunes?" That album is one of my all-time favorites...

Thanks Steve I really do appreciate your kind words. My wife and I meet you at the Derwood, MD show last year. I was the guy who talked to you about Prince and how much of an amazing artist he is, don't know if you remember me. But anyway her name is Chelle and your prayers would TOTALLY be welcomed. I agree with Eis I your "Skinny" album is in my top ten favorite albums ever. PLEASE, PLEASE. PLEASE do another one. I can relate to Emily's meloncoly temperment I am still like that at times and as I'm sure you know kids like that turn out to be exceptional adults (exhibt A her playing on the last album). My next question is about your solo album I hope that's okay . A  line in "Love Sanctifies" really has effected me for the 7 years I've listened to it, has it been that long, wow! "The radiant Lord of light reveals Himself in the death of night." I foundd that to be true when we lost our daughter....I was wondering what led you to write that line? Can't wait to see you guys in Charlottesville. Island what? When was that deciced?
