Love the new album guys! My wife bought it for me for Christmas err... my birthday, err... our Aniversary... Well it's here, and I would have waited for Christmas again if I had to! The Choir writes modern hymns, that's how I see it. Or better, postmodern. So much of the message is tangible and accesible. I love the shovel references (Somehow I always imagine Joe Pesci holding the shovel) Thaks so much, don't ever stop, and I'd love to hear Derri sing anything. We all appreciate Marv |

Mr. Steve, What can you tell us about the song Kissers and Killers? It is one of the strangest of the band's titles, and I have never quite understood it. Also, on Chase the Kangaroo, who is the lady singing the little interlude on track 6 I think. She sounds like how I remember my mom singing her special music at church or just playing her piano in our living room, and I was curious. If you care to think back that far to the Chase album, which of those songs held the most meaning to you personally and which to the band as a whole? It was a ground breaking record, and I have enjoyed rediscovering it for myself this week. This site has put you guys at the top of my playlist for the past month, and I see no change for the future. Thanks for your time and attention. __________________ my strength is dead

Sorry, I got busy for a couple of days, but I'll answer your questions now. Mo Jo Jo -- That is Derri's Mom singing between songs on "Chase." It was a song she wrote (God Behind the Clouds). As the pastor's wife she played piano and often sang for the congregation. It is Derri's Dad, brother Joe Daugherty, who says, "Thank you Louise," from the pulpit. I got my hands on the cassette recording and put it between the songs. It's one of my proudest production moves ever. Louise passed away just a few months ago. In fact, Derri wasn't present when the drums were recorded for "Mighty" because he was in Los Angeles at her memorial service. Louise was quite a character...and a loving generous soul. So is Derri, come to think of it. "Chase" was our most ambitious album. It took 20 weeks and there was a lot of tension in the process. I think the "Clouds" to "Sad Face" song combination rivals anything we've accomplished creatively. As far as "Kissers and Killers" goes, I guess I was just confessing to the blatant dichotomy evident in our behavior and manifest in our hearts -- being God fearing good guys and depraved criminals simultaneously. |

Mark, "I've gotta set my knees on the ground" is a statement of personal humility. If I'm going to speak judgmentally to a friend, I sure ought to do it with a humble heart -- because I'm also flawed. As far as the Schnapps goes, that was a rare departure, which is why I recall it so clearly. I'm with you -- Red wine is my vice. Perhaps when we get to heaven we'll be permitted to taste the ultimate vintage -- from the first miracle of our Lord! And remember, "Moderation is a truly wise ideal... Away with the demons of debauchery!" |

Thanks for the insight, Steve. I didn't realize that Derri is a PK, too. I am terribly sorry to hear of his mom passing on. While it is a comfort to know that your loved one is in Heaven, knowing so doesn't completely take away the pain. But that's the only hope we all cling to for ourselves and each other, so I wish Derri and his family my belated deepest regrets and prayers. Derri, Have you ever heard Bryan Duncan's "Mrs. Bailey Has A Daughter"? It sounds like the story of mine and my brothers' youth, and I'm sure you can relate. I follow you on K&K, now. That is the most difficult part of knowing God to understand in my book, more so than a good God allowing the tragedies in our fallen world. When a man like Paul talks about doing that which he doesn't want to and not doing the things he wants to. THAT is tough, man. I would like to know that I know I'm going to Heaven, but knowing that I sin despite my best intentions is quite a mountain to climb, even though I KNOW that Jesus paid it all. I have hang-ups with guilt, I suppose. Anyway, thanks brother Steve. You ROCK, dude! __________________ my strength is dead

Reply with quote | #86 | Hey Steve, Speaking of K&K, there are two lines in that song that say "Finders, weepers" then "Losers, keepers"... I've always interpreted this as reference to when Jesus says "He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it"... is this right or is it about something else? |

Just found a site with the lyrics, and it has been a blessing. Man, I've been missing out on the lyrics all this time? I am but a fool. Steve, Derri and all who are involved in the writing process....I have to say that I am very, very impressed and moved by the lyrics alone. (I have been singing the words wrong all along...I thought some of those lines didn't seem right) You have some serious giftage, and I owe you an apology for thinking of you guys as a lot more "secular" than the lyrics (and your open hearts on this board) have revealed. The scales have fallen from my eyes. Thanks guys. Just checking out the brilliant Car, etc. It's not a black heart where I feel Wicked schemes I may reveal Washed in blood each time I kneel It's not a black heart where I feel Brilliant!

Steve, I have really been enjoying the new album. Thanks again for enriching our lives with your art. Terrible Mystery seems to be my favorite new lyric. It was difficult to hear it without becoming misty, even before I knew what inspired it. It now forms a trilogy of heartbreak in my mind with Peter Case's Two Angels and Victoria William's Can't Cry Hard Enough. If you like Owen Meaney (one of my favorite contemporary novels), you would probably love anything by Mark Helprin. Start with A Soldier of the Great War or Winter's Tale if you are interested. Looking forward to seeing you at Cstone. Grace and peace. |

First my question for the band....on the C2K LIVE case is says Vol 3 of 11. What is that? Are there 11 live CD's? Also, Steve, I will never hear A SAD FACE the same way ever again after coming to know the origins for one of my favorite songs. I think if that were me, I would never write again, but He obviously has been very gracious and given you a very powerful gift that you have put to good use. My 5-yr old daughter loves wide-eyed wonder. I told her how you wrote that for your little girl, and after I played it a couple of times, she was singing along. The morning after she was born, my daughter's eyes were WIDE open and looking all around. That is one thing about her that I will never forget. She's still a wonder to me and a remarkable gift from God. On the Water-to-Wine miracle wine...I wonder if it really was the best the world has EVER known, or was it the best for the people of their time? I mean a 1928 Chateau Lafite-Rothschild might have tasted like crap to them, whereas Mogen David may have been like a bottle of 1928 Chateau Lafite-Rothschild. I do believe that there will be some sort of wine in Heaven and that it will be very very good, but I wonder if we will even want to stop and drink after seeing our Lord for real. I still can't imagine that reality. It makes my mind reboot. __________________ my strength is dead

Cocoa -- Thanks for the kind words about our music. I've never read anything by Mark Helprin. I just wrote down the titles of the books you recomended. Mark -- It must've been red, don't you think? I can't imagine what grape. Tonight Derri, Mike Roe and I enjoyed Pinot Noir (Mike is here with us working on an album called "Island Dreams" to offer on our June/July Lost Dogs tour. It's a ridiculous novelty project.) Mo JO JO -- I think Eis is correct about the "Vol 3" thing. I've never looked closely at the artwork and I sure don't intend to listen to the recording. I'd rather let that gig remain glorious in my memory. Brilliant speculation about the "water into wine" miracle! And so GOOD to learn of your own 5 year-old wide eyed wonder! |

DaLe -- Terry Scott Taylor is home in Sunny Cali working hard to meet a deadline for an exciting cartoon project he and Rob Watson are working on for Nickelodeon television network. This particular "Island Dreams" album we're completing was originally created by Terry and Derri several years ago for a different purpose and never released. I had already played tons of percussion on it but Dr. Love's artistic contribution would be necessary to call it a "Dogs" thing. The guitar parts he added yesterday to six songs already made a huge difference for the better. That guy is one of the most amazing guitar players ever! Tonight we'll get him to play on 4 more tunes. This project is OUT THERE. I have no idea what people will think. It's likable, though. Strange and good! |

Thanks for that update Steve. Now on to the lyrics. I to keep going back to your "Skinny" album but I can't keep that disc out of my cd player, been trying for the last 7 seven years . Anywho on "Woe Is Skinny" the line about -banging your bars with a hammer that he hides in a burgandy jar- what is that is reference to, I imagine it must be a pretty personal line because it's so obtuse but of course I could be wrong. Again you've been more than generous with your time muchas gracias the time you spend with us. __________________ "Some wounds will never mend, says the Author of the story.."-Terry Scott Taylor |

Have the answers to Chase the Kangaroo been revealed? What is the main theme behind that song, and what about the lines referring to Jesus hiding diamonds in the land where love is rare to find, as well as digging in a trench to Sydney until I die? __________________ my strength is dead
