Terrible Mystery...sounds to me like the mystery of marriage...two fallen creatures attempting to love...hurting one another even when we don't intend to...and the truth is we never fully reveal ourselves to one another.

Yes, that is sad.

Okay, I'm gonna try to answer most of these questions.

Mykel, I didn't think of Dr. Love's song "The Treasure in You," but I love that tune and have accompanied Mike live on percussion playing that song...so perhaps it subliminally influenced me.  My favorite Roe song of all time is "Ache Beautiful."  He's a wonderful artist and I'm truly fond of him as a person. What a character!  I can't wait to get in a van with Mike,Terry and Derri this summer!  Conversation with those guys is always enthralling.

Warbler, yes, I have to admit that "Polar Boy" is self confessional...and it sure is dark.  I rarely write lyrics before music, but "The Chicken" and "Polar Boy" were exceptions -- written before we started the album (Free Flying Soul).  I'm disinclined (Is that a word?) to offer personal details here and now.  Anyhow, I expected the tone of that album to be very grim, but Derri was in a good mood and he kept playing sweet sounding music on the guitar.  I wound up writing sentimental lyrics like, "Yellow Haired Monkeys," "Butterfly," "The Ocean," "Salamander" etc.  Even Tim couldn't derail the good vibe train (Tim is a good natured, "fun to be around" guy, but musically speaking he tended to be an advocate of sonic tension at the time.  Check out the bass on "If You're Listening").  Ultimately, that album has a wide emotional scope -- which reflects life honestly, I think. "He's got his purple nose pressed against your icy window..."  Dangerous question, Chris! You're a crafty journalist!

Mighty, I hope Derri won't mind me revealing that "Terrible Mystery" is about his divorce from Marlei a couple of years ago. They're very close, still. After all these years, Derri and I know each other's hearts fairly well. "She's Alright" is about another close friend of ours who is recently divorced and struggling.  "We Give, We Take" is me talking to my wife, Nancy.  "How I Wish I Knew," like I mentioned before, was written about my daughter, Emily.  "Fine Fun Time" is about sitting around the patio table by Tim's pool on warm nights discussing, politics, faith, life...and laughing like hyenas in the night.  And that's about enough disclosure for one post!

MO JOJO, Sorry, I almost missed your question about  "Weather Girl."  Well, I actually  don't care to comment on that lyric...and I'm not even sure if it makes much sense.  The guitars on it are awesome, though!  We all loved to play it in concert because it rocked!

Yellow Skies sure did rock live!! My wife and I were a couple of the loyal troops that were at the Thursday night (if I recall) midnight shows at Lingere back in those days. Great memories indeed, those are.
Steve thanks for being so candid, I kind of almost feel awkward reading this personal background on these songs but it makes the songs that much more real. Although I never could figure out what Yellow Skies was all about...or Polar Boy, but that one always made me feel a tad funny :-)

Thanks, Steve, for your candid response. Just so you know, I wasn't asking with my journalist hat on, and I certainly wasn't trying to be crafty. Just genuinely curious. "Polar Boy" was, for a long time, a song I routinely skipped over because I found the lyrics too emotionally upsetting to listen to. I'd explain why, but I guess it's my turn to disincline any personal details.

Only recently have I been able to embrace the song, mostly because of the wonderful musical arrangement. It's even on my iPod, but I still don't listen to it as much as your other stuff. But now I have OHTMHF to keep me occupied.

Chris

Well said. Thanks, Steve.

I figured that "Weather Girl" has sort of an "if it sounds too good to be true.." moral. And /or is a warning that the satan comes as an angel of light and is clever in his disguises and the master of deceipt.  (Isn't it funny that we're not tempted by ugly things or undesirable things- if you're on a diet, the bowl of steamed rice ala carte isn't tempting, but the baby back ribs platter....)

Also, I just want to say that I appreciate all of the guys in the band and what you each contribute as well as what you do as a whole. Thanks for spending some time with us and for baring your soul a bit.

Someone once wrote that a sad face is good for the heart, and it seems thought this discussion that there have been a few things happen in each of our lives. Let's remember the band and the users of this board when we pray.

your 're not kidding. wow. i don't know anyone in the band, but i can't imagine listening to that song ('mystery' as referenced above) in the same light again.  don't have the liner notes in front of me, but from steve's post, it sounds like he wrote the lyrics. if so, double wow. very, very affecting.

I didn't know until now...I am listening to "Terrible Mystery" at the moment, and am hearing it in quite a different, sad, and moving way now. I've got a friend who's wife is probably going to file for divorce here any time now (they are separated)...not a very amicable one...I'm thinking he might benefit from hearing this song.

Nice to hear some honest discussions on the board. Free Flying Soul always reminds me of my battle to control alcohol around 1997/8, and although I came out of it able to cope with it in moderation, there are many images there, and on Speckled Bird, which seem to touch on where I was back then. Thank God for a Saviour who blesses the poor in spirit and those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. I mean hunger and thirst - sounds like a serious lack of righteousness don't it?

I'm grateful for this board and the Choir for being a haven to be yourself, your flawed self and not have to be super-Christian. That's the thing that struck me the most about the Choir at first. When I got Free Flying Soul the lyrics were soooo honest. "If you're listening now" "The Ocean" and "The Chicken" stick out, the lyrics were like "I love you Lord but I'm a screw up, help...." whereas the Christian music I previously was exposed to was "God is great and that's it" which He is but life is brutal at times....Mightraygun thank you for your kind post. To answer your question I don't know how my wife gets through each day, from the vomitting, the blacking out, etc. suffice it to say I do not question that woman has the strength of the Lord in her. I marvel at it every day and I cry on the inside thankful that He has given me such an amazing mate. Hearing about Derri's divorce crushed my heart because I only met the guy once and he's so incredible I wish only the best things in life for him.

"Yellow skies" to me has always been an intiamte view between husband and wife through the bad and the hysterical times. The line "saucers in the kitchen flying like ufo's" always brings a smile to me, thankfully we haven't had that "mystical experience" yet. Again thanks to the band and all the monkeyboarders for being so open, honest, and accepting each of you rock! Let's all meet in Nashville in May!!!!!!

Originally Derri was singing "beautiful mystery," with a more spiritual intent, I suppose.  I changed it to "terrible mystery" took it a different direction.  Similarly, my original lyric for "About Love" (from Circle Slide) was -- "There's somthing pitiful about love."  "Wonderful" sang a lot better and served the irony better.

I read that in the boxset booklet and always wished that the band had went with that. Because honestly love is pitiful at times, we've all done crazy things for loved ones that could be viewed as pitiful. Also only the ones that we truly care about can make us feel pitiful or wonderful but we're human so usually it's both .

Yeah, I came across that in the boxset booklet as well, but I think singing "wonderful" is pure lyrical genius...makes the feel of the song stand out that much more against the chorus.

but steve, when i listen to 'terrible mystery' through the lens of knowing it involved derri's divorce, it's not so much ironic (to me) as it is just achingly beautiful. (which, on a sidetrack, reminds me of mike roe's song by a similar , another 'love lost' song). to be able to demonstrate such love and obvious care for someone in the face of that situation means that some serious healing is at work (although, if the lyrics are really autobiographical for him, it certainly isn't quite done.)

so, in some ways, like someone said earlier, i almost don't want to intrude into that situation, even if it's through the filter of a song that is, at best, distilling an actual situation as the starting point.  i guess if you all were more like 'actors' and the characters in the songs were more detached from your literal experiences, then they would have a different emotional registration. but, you don't seem to be acting and the songs don't seem to be told in third person. how do you put yourselves out there on that wing? i mean, i create buildings. spaces, whatever. the stuff we live in. you still have to put your soul into the work, but i can't imagine being a writer who is literally bare themselves that way. i don't have that kind of freedom to go from angry to happy to sad so quickly (or it's going to be miserable living in something created on an 'angry day'). does you ever feel like you've revealed too much at times?

It's really not so risky being open with relative strangers.  I'm less transparent with those closest to me.  For example, saucers never flew in our kitchen.  That was hyperbolic.  We're much too reserved.  I rarely raise my voice and am very uncomfortable communicating intense emotion at home.  Songs are my outlet.  But I rarely discuss the lyrics with anyone close to me, especially those who the songs are about.

And for the most part, Derri just sings the words and doesn't say much (if anything) about the content.  No need.  It's understood.

ART is a tremendous means by which painfully gaurded individuals bare their souls.

I truly appreciate the thoughtful words from all of you. I've always been comfortable singing the great lyrics Steve would write. We know each other so well and have gone through "the fire" together, so it makes it easy to sing. He knows what i feel and can frame it in a way i'm at ease with. I'm a pretty closed person but have always lived through Steve's words.

Derri,

Any news regarding the dog tour?  Are you guys gonna have a new album completed before your journey to Cornerstone?  I'm looking forward to seeing you guys in Virginia.
